Last week was intense and productive. I've had the pleasure to attend the Red Hat Partner Conference in Madrid and to speak at the Pentaho Partner Summit in Sintra. I've learned a lot of lessons, but the most important one is that an ecosystem always wins.
The world of technology is built on interactions. Interactions between customers and partners. Synergies amongst different species of partners. Even competitors are interacting with each other and the term "coopetition" has been coined to explain new and complex relationships.
The very foundation of IT is intercommunication. Systems Integrators are connecting disparate sources. Technology companies are investing in certification and integrated systems to make it easier for tools to cooperate. Cloud vendors are promising to hide the complexity behind and simplify how we interact with solutions. Channel partners are integrating different products as part of their portfolio to simplify provisioning.
I'm convinced that to win in the long run we need to build the greatest and most productive ecosystem ever. It should be easy and rewarding to do business with us. Each and every MongoDB partner we onboard should share our vision and be part of a global community. Customers working with our ecosystem should feel the difference. Ultimately, these alliances will contribute to our bottom line and make a difference.

MongoDB Alliances ― What Happened in the Last 90 Days in EMEA? (Update)
“How did it get so late so soon? It's night before it's afternoon. December is here before it's June. My goodness how the time has flown. How did it get so late so soon?”
Time flies is an expression that you can fully grasp when you're doing the things you love. I started to work at 10gen three months ago and it seems like yesterday. What happened? How? Why? To force myself into writing here are my answers. I'll be focusing on our results in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
Note: I've added a few clarifications inline on Aug 5th, 2013.
Executive Summary ― What happened?
In the last quarter we've added more partners than in all the previous quarters together. We've seen a triple digits growth in members and a fortyfold increase in the average number of employees per partner. It's been a crazy ride and the momentum around MongoDB is unbelievable and (hopefully) unstoppable. This trend is all-encompassing and includes technology, cloud, service and channel partners. How have we reached this goal?
A Stellar Team ― How?
A company growing so fast can make a lot of mistakes and hire the wrong people. 10gen is one of the most notable exceptions to this rule. Each and every hire brings adds exceptional skills and knowledge to an already stellar team. Sales reps, solution architects, support staff, engineers and consultants are all helping to build a great ecosystem. The MongoDB Community is contributing too. The results are due to all of us working in the same direction. However, you can't drive adoption exclusively from the inside. Partners are embracing MongoDB, but what drives them?
What's in it for Partners ― Why?
One key reason is that the market opportunity is huge. With MongoDB you can cover 80% of the use cases of Relational plus NoSQL databases. Obviously, it doesn't make sense to "rip and replace" or migrate all your databases... if you're happy with your existing tools, keep them. However, if you're building a new application, chances are that it can be entirely built on MongoDB.
If you were to choose a new technology, what would you pick? There's a chance that you'll select the one that gives you more advantages in more cases. Partners (and customers) tends to adopt easy to use, well supported and stable technologies. Complex, fragile or incomplete solutions might hurt your reputation and your clients.

Changing Name and Improving Focus
You might have noticed that this blog changed name and URL. Instead of having one single blog for everything, I decided to split my blogging activities in two separate blogs.
If you're interested in MySQL, Oracle, Databases, Business Intelligence, Open Source, Cloud, etc. this is the place to be. Blog's new name is Data & Co.
A big "Thank you!" to David Stokes who moved all the planet.mysql.com references to the old blog to this new one.
On the other hand, if you'd like to read about communication, marketing, advertising, PR, soft skills, etc. feel free look at Publicime. Please see the introduction of my new blog here. I've moved non-technical articles to this one to make sure my posts on Data & Co are exclusively technology-centric.
This will result in better focus for both blogs and I won't annoy you with topics you're not interested in. The old url is redirecting to Data & Co. by default.

2011, A great year for MySQL in review...
I see so many posts on what happened to company X, product Y and dream Z that I couldn't resist the temptation to summarize this great year for MySQL. At the end of 2010, Oracle did an announcement we were all waiting for: MySQL 5.5 is GA! Another year has passed since then and it's time to reflect on what has been done.
I know this is a long post. I tried to rewrite it at least 10 times to make it shorter, but I couldn't condense the list. Hence, I wrote a summary in the beginning for those who don't want to read it all.
I believe that 2011 was an exceptional year for MySQL and I really enjoy being part of this team. I wish all of us a lot of success and fun in the years to come!
Summary:
Oracle released many MySQL 5.6 and MySQL Cluster 7.2 DMRs accompanied by new versions of MySQL Enterprise Monitor, MySQL Enterprise Backup, MySQL Workbench (and utilities), MySQL Proxy, MySQL Cluster Manager and Connectors.
The MySQL team unveiled new products like the MySQL Installer for Windows and Oracle VM Templates for MySQL. Besides, the MySQL Enterprise offering has been enriched with new commercial extensions. MySQL can now be leveraged as one of the Oracle data management solutions with new certifications and the integration with My Oracle Support increased the business value of customers' investment on Oracle technologies.
Additionally MySQL presented at major events across the world and won a few awards.

Web Based Seminars (aka Webinars), why not?
On Thursday the 8th, we delivered the most successful italian MySQL webinar ever. We had about 350 registrations, thanks for your support and constant participation!
We also awarded a wonderful MySQL t-shirt to the one who first answered correctly to a trivia question, congratulations to the winner.

In conclusion, what I've learned from this fulfilling experience?
Delivering web based seminars (webinars for short) is a great way to stay in touch with customers and to address specific topics. This powerful tool can be used to update on product directions, sales offers, technical topics and present joint partner solutions. The audience can sit in the comfort of their home or office and receive a quick update without spending too much time or money.
If you are a Sales Engineer, Sales Manager, Marketing Manager, Product Manager or if you simply want to stay virtually in touch with your users, this is a delivery method worth of consideration.

MySQL is Emerging in the Emerging Markets
A survey of more than 400 developers showed that MySQL is closing the lead Microsoft's SQL server has in emerging markets. More than 50 percent of developers in the emerging market countries said they are using Microsoft's SQL Server, but 46 percent said they are using MySQL.
This is another great news, after the results coming from the european SMBs survey. The adoption and usage of MySQL is still growing despite the economic downturn. Go MySQL!

MySQL, Open Source, SMBs and my Home Country
I know that you may have read about it before, but I want to summarize some interesting evolutions of MySQL and the Open Source adoption in Europe.
I will reflect on it with a specific focus on Italy, for two reasons: Italy is my home country and is of the territories where I work as a Sales Engineer (together with Iberia and Emerging Markets).
MySQL has just released survey of 637 small and medium-size businesses (less than 500 employees) in Europe documenting open source usage. According to the survey the future will be full of satisfaction for MySQL.

- When asked if they intend to increase the usage of MySQL, this time Italian companies are at the top, planning to expand the adoption by 64%;
- In two years only 15% of Italian SMBs will not use have any open source product in their infrastructure;
- 57% of Italian users are taking advantage of open source for critical projects;
- Top reasons for adopting MySQL are: cost savings, performance and scalability and ease of use;
